MY MANN [4/24/17]

To be honest this show was supposed to be a wash. I was planning on playing nonstop Herbie Mann (the godfather of international fusion and jazz flute), but I really felt bad about it. So I cobbled together some more contemporary jazzy music later in the show. I think it went… ok.

If the featured image on this post revs your engines as much as it revs mine, read this.

Hip Hop/Jazz Flutes [4/17/17]

This show is a change of pace. Like the rest of the world I’ve been listening to nothing but Kenrick Lamar’s newest (and sadly flute-less) album, DAMN. Nonetheless it got me thinking about the recent resurgence of flute in rap beats (read about it here). Tonight is about this resurrection of the world’s best instrument, from the more mainstream to the experimental, ending with some of the influences that got flute to its place in hip hop today.

Speed, Glue & Shinki [4/10/17]

I have a hat that says “Sex, Drugs and Flute.” It’s a horrible joke and it was way too expensive, but I don’t regret it at all.

Speed, Glue & Shinki exemplifies the message on my hat more than any other featured flutist on Sick Flutes. Just seeing the above picture and reading the name of the band should explain the sex and drugs. The flutes should be taken for granted. I don’t mess around here.

This is the band that introduced me to Japanese psych rock, but I don’t remember how I discovered them. Though Don’t Say No is generally not the most popular song on this lovely album, it certainly has the best flute, and therefore it’s the most popular in my heart.

An Almost Improvisational Tone [4/3/17]

This weekend was the surprise release of Rick and Morty Season 3. In its honor, this show emulated the feel of Interdimensional Cable, which according to Rick has an “almost improvisational tone.”

You Play Ball Like a GIRL [3/27/17]

Hey, all female artists today. Why not? The flutes are still sick as always.

This show spans multiple genres, from experimental to punk to indie pop to jazz. I even have a little sprinkle of classic country in there. One of my favorite shows to date.

Important note: “Calculator” by Micachu and the Shapes uses the guitar riff from “Tequila” by The Champs. “Tequila” was the second song I ever uploaded to an iPod, mainly because of its prominent place in the classic movie The Sandlot, where today’s show title comes from.

Khaki [3/6/17]

I was walking around campus and I realized all the buildings around me were some shade of khaki (or tan, or beige, or sepia, or whatever). I looked down and I was wearing khaki pants. My shoes were basically khaki. The sidewalk was tan. I got back to my dorms and the fucking walls were khaki. I was so disgusted by the color I decided to make this show all about it, in the hope that it would change my mind. All the album covers are some shade of tan or beige or sepia or something. Finally I can associate something beautiful with khaki.
